Your First Three Money Moves
A practical starting point when every dollar already has a job.
No score promise. No purchase required. Use this guide for one small step at a time, starting with the bills and records you have today.
Know what is on your reports
Request free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Choose one report to review first. Check names, accounts, balances and payment dates. Make a separate note for anything that seems wrong, with the account name and the detail you need to check. Do not upload your report or sensitive account numbers to this site.
Protect the bills that matter most
List what must be covered before your next pay date. Consider the consequences for housing, utilities, food, medication, essential insurance and getting to work. Then write the amount available, the amount due and any gap. Contact a provider or issuer about a shortfall before agreeing to a payment plan.
Pick one credit move
Choose something specific that fits your situation: save documentation for a report error, send a dispute about inaccurate information, confirm a due date, ask about a hardship option, or reduce a balance when the money is available after essentials. No extra payment is required to review your own records.
